21 Netflix Originals Worth Watching

If you have been watching Netflix for a while, you know there are many shows that are Netflix Originals available. The genres and quality vary greatly from show to show. These are a few that I have personally enjoyed. I am not including kid’s show on this list and will make another post about them soon.

1.) The Umbrella Academy – (1 season TV14) This show is amazing! If you haven’t watched it, go do it now. They are superhero “siblings” that aren’t really related. They were all born on the same day under unusual circumstances. They all drifted apart and are suddenly pulled back together. Madness ensues as they try to save the world from complete destruction. Also, the soundtrack to this show is fabulous!

Netflix description: As kids, they were superheroes. Now they’re super dysfunctional. And they’ve got eight days to stave off the end of the world.

2.) Tidying Up with Marie Kondo – (1 season TVPG) This feel-good show will make you want to clean your whole house! It’s amazing to watch as not only the homes but the people transform during the process.

Netflix description: In a series of inspiring home makeovers, world-renowned tidying expert Marie Kondo helps clients clear out the clutter — and choose joy.

3.) Santa Clarita Diet – (3 seasons TVMA) If you can get past the goriness of the first couple episodes, you will be hooked. I would watch this entire show simply for the adventures of their daughter, Abby, and neighbor boy, Eric. There is such chemistry between the two and they are hilarious to watch.

Netflix description: Mom craves human flesh. Dad just wants a normal life. A good marriage is all about compromise.

4.) Girlboss – (1 season TVMA) I cannot even put into words how much I enjoyed watching this! This is one of those shows that makes you cheer out loud, then go out, and make things happen. It’s such a fun, inspiring, empowering show.

Netflix description: She’s saucy, savvy, and determined to build a fashion empire — one amazing vintage jacket at a time.

5.) Travelers – (3 seasons TVMA) This show has a Scifi/action-adventure feel that appealed to my inner nerd. It was something that my husband and I could watch together. There are a lot of moments that make you think and episodes and seasons end on cliff hangers. We actually discussed this show a lot while bingeing our way through it.

Netflix description: They’ve arrived from a bleak and hopeless future to save us all from our greatest enemy: ourselves.

6.) After Life – (1 season TVMA) His wife has passed away and he is dealing with it by lashing out at the world. This show starts off funny and a little sad but starts to turn around as he makes some unlikely friends. Plus, there’s a dog.

Netflix description: His coping mechanism is to act like a jerk. But it’s not really working for him — or for anyone else.

7.) Disenchantment – (1 part TV14) Think medieval Simpsons and you’ll know what to expect. The Princess is a drunkard and gets into all kinds of trouble. It’s funny and really easy to watch. Nice to watch after the kids have gone to bed at night.

Netflix description: Misadventure is her middle name. Unfortunately, “princess” is her title. A madcap medieval quest from Matt Groening.

8.) You – (1 season TVMA) This show will leave you creeped out but you will not be able to stop watching until the very end. You can’t help but like him and then be a little shocked. It’s everything that we were ever warned about and then some.

Netflix description: Boy meets girl. Boy falls for girl. Boy obsesses over girl. Just how far will boy go to get girl?

9.) Lost In Space – (1 SeasonĀ  TVPG) A fun show about a family in space, a huge robot, and their many adventures. We watched this as a family and it was a huge hit.

Netflix description: A planet in turmoil. A powerful robot. A doctor with dark secrets. Wherever the Robinsons go, danger’s never far behind.

10.) Our Planet – (Limited Series TV-G) Something interesting and beautiful to play in the background when working on other things. A good educational series to watch with your kids. I watched this with my daughters while I was editing photos.

Netflix description: From searing deserts to frozen tundras to infinite oceans, a stunning journey across the planet’s precious natural habitats awaits.

11.) The Crown – (2 seasons TVMA) This follows the early years of Queen Elizabeth the second, her family, and the history of England. I really enjoyed this show. It’s something that I could watch by myself with a glass of wine and be really content.

Netflix description: Duty. Family. Power. A young woman rises to rule an empire amid the challenges of the modern age.

12.) 13 Reasons Why – (2 seasons TVMA) The first season of this follows the book. It’s sad, raw, and very honest. It is very dark since it is dealing with teen suicide.

Netflix description: Why did Hannah Baker take her own life? Her classmates all have secrets… and the truth is about to come out.

13.) Aggretsuko – (1 season TV14) Don’t think about it, just watch it. For everybody that has ever been annoyed with life, this is for you. I didn’t expect to like this but I ended up loving it.

Netflix description: With her career going nowhere and personal life nonexistent, she’ll turn to her one comfort — death metal karaoke.

14.) Derry Girls – (1 season TVMA) I was a teen in the 90’s so I could really relate with these crazy girls.

Netflix description: Northern Ireland had its troubles in the 1990s. But being a teenager has been difficult since the beginning of time.

15.) Sick Note – (2 seasons TVMA) The concept of this show is a little far fetched but it was really funny.

Netflix description: His doctor’s an idiot. His diagnosis is rubbish. But his fake illness has given him a crazy new life.

16.) Sense 8 – (2 seasons TVMA) Imagine suddenly being able to see through somebody else’s eyes or use their skillset as needed, that’s what this show is about and obviously, there is a deeper sinister plot afoot. A good show about how we are all different but all the same.

Netflix description: Their gift of telepathic communication made them targets for extermination. But it’s the one thing keeping them alive.

17.) Between – (2 seasons TV14) This show is honestly very scary. The idea is that for some unknown reason everybody over 22 has died and the town has been completely blocked off. This leaves children with no resources to take care of themselves. The show follows along as they try to survive and attempt to figure out why this happened.

Netflix description: The adults in Pretty Lake die. Those under age 22 live. But no one can leave town. Now, what do you do?

18.) Lucifer – (4 Seasons TV14) My husband and I are currently watching this. The idea is that the Devil decided to take a vacation to Earth, L.A. to be exact. He joins up with a police detective and helps her to solve crimes using his special talents.

Netflix description: Bored with being the Lord of Hell, the devil relocates to Los Angeles, where he opens a nightclub and forms a connection with a homicide detective.

19.) The Order – (1 Season TVMA) My husband loves shows about magic and this was no exception. This show takes place at a college and has a love story that goes along with the main story.

Netflix description: Secret societies. Ancient rituals. Sinister creatures. Jack’s first year of college is off to a wild start.

20.) Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – (2 Parts TV14) Just forget everything about the old Sabrina sitcom. It’s not relevant here. This show is dark and twisted but in a good way.

Netflix description: Magic and Mischief collide as half-human, half-witch Sabrina navigates between two worlds: mortal teen life and her family’s legacy, the Church of Night.

21.) Stranger Things – (2 Seasons TV14) You can’t make one of these lists without putting Stranger Things on it. This show is the best. I love the Scifi, end of the world conspiracy and the 1980’s vibes. I’m originally from Indiana and this show feels like home in a weird way.

Netflix description: A lost boy. A government lab steeped in terrible secrets. And a dark force that turns a town upside down.

That’s quite a list. Which are your favorites? Anything you would like to add?

  1. One of my all-time favorites is Grace and Frankie. I love the show; it really helped me come to learn about and accept gay people as a part of our world.

  2. I think the only one of these I have watched so far is Stranger Things… I will have to add the others to my watchlist! Thanks for the suggestions:)

  3. I desperately need a new series to get my teeth into! I am waiting for the next season of Brooklyn 99.. I have never considered Disenchantment, but recently it has been cropping up, and I fancy something easy to watch!
