Hulu

I didn’t realize how many awesome ’90s shows were on Hulu until I started looking for them!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

TVPG, 1997, 7 seasons

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a comedy-action series that chronicles the adventures of Buffy Summers, a teenage girl who is gifted with the strength and skill to hunt vampires.

This was my all-time favorite show! I have watched it so many times over the years. The witty banter, the monsters, the friendships, feeling like you’re different, and romance, it’s all timeless.

Dawson’s Creek

TV14, 1998, 6 seasons

Provocative drama about the coming-of-age of a group of teenage best friends in a small New England coastal town. Dawson Leery seems to have a perfect life. An aspiring filmmaker, he soon finds out that growing up isn’t as simple and clear-cut as the Steven Spielberg movies he so idolizes. The arrival of Jennifer, the attractive new girl in town, puts a barrier between Dawson and his longtime best friend, Josephine “Joey”–a local girl who lives across the pond with her pregnant sister and her sister’s black boyfriend. He also must deal with good buddy Pacey’s obsession with the school’s attractive new teacher. Things won’t be so quiet in the small town.

Every teen and early 20-somethings in the late ’90s knew about this show and most of them were watching.

Seinfeld

TVPG, 1989, 9 seasons

In the Emmy award-winning “Seinfeld,” Jerry Seinfeld provides a hysterical look at life as a single adult in the ’90s.

Yada, Yada, Yada and a soup Nazi! Everybody was watching Seinfeld.

Family Matters

TVG, 1989 (ran into the ’90s), 9 seasons

What matters most? Family, of course! Over its nine hit seasons, Family Matters brings us a hilarious slice of middle-class Americana — along with one of TV’s wackiest characters, nerdy genius Steve Urkel. The extended Winslow family redefines the word “togetherness” as their home splits at the seams with chaos, confusion, and laughter.

This is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about TV in the early ’90s.

Sabrina: The Teenage Witch

TVG, 1996, 7 seasons

Sabrina is a normal teenager, except for one thing — She’s a witch! Guided By her aunts, who come from a long line of witches, and Salem, a mischievous warlock doing penance as a black cat, Sabrina continually struggles to harness her powers while wittingly wreaking havoc on friends and foes alike. While struggling through the growing pains associated with being a witch and getting into lots of harmless trouble along the way, Sabrina realizes that magic is not quite as easy as pointing your finger.

Likewise, this is the first show I think of when I think of the late ’90s.

Saved by the Bell

TVPG, 1988 (running into the ’90s), 5 seasons

A TV show centered on six students and their years at Bayside High School in Palisades, California.

I was a little young for this during its first run but ended up watching it all on reruns over the years.

Saved by the Bell: The College Years

TVPG, 1993, 1 season

The kids from Bayside go off to college.

Only if you really loved the Saved by the Bell cast and couldn’t let them go.

Full House

TVG, 1987 (ran into the ’90s), 8 seasons

Comedian Bob Saget stars in this heartfelt comedy series as Danny, a widowed father raising three young daughters with the help of his rebel brother-in-law (John Stamos) and offbeat best bud (Dave Coulier). Living under one roof, these friends experience the trials of parenthood along with their fair share of laughs and life lessons.

Who didn’t watch Full House or at least the reruns that ran forever?

Frasier

TVPG, 1993, 11 seasons

Comedy series set in Seattle, WA, which chronicles the lives of an eloquently pompous radio show host Dr. Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer), his brazen radio producer ROZ (Peri Gilpin), his competitive, high-brow brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce), their crotchety father Martin (John Mahoney) and his quirky live-in nurse Daphne (Jane Leeves).

We watched reruns of this on late-night TV for years. It was better than it sounds and had a long run!

Hangin’ with Mr. Copper

TVPG, 1992, 5 seasons

Life couldn’t be better for Mark Cooper (Mark Curry). He’s charming, funny, playful and athletic–a really great guy … And he’ll be the first to tell you so! Just out of school and on his own for the first time, Mark shares a house with two beautiful women. The former college basketball superstar and ultimate prankster also happen to be the coolest substitute teacher around in Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper.

Seriously, just watch this if you need those mid-90s vibes.

Living Single

TV14, 1993, 5 seasons

Khadijah James (Queen Latifah) has it all—a great job running her own trendy magazine and part ownership of a fancy brownstone. Sharing the ownership of their home is her endearingly naïve cousin Synclaire (Kim Coles) who’s also Khadijah’s assistant at the magazine. Their third roommate is a sarcastic, selfish fortune hunter Regine (Kim Fields). And even though she doesn’t live in the brownstone, Khadijah’s best friend, Maxine (Erika Alexander)—a tough, aggressive divorce attorney always searching for Mr. Right—spends more time here than she does in her own home. With love, laughter and a little bit of luck, four women in New York City on the threshold of the rest of their lives hilariously celebrate Living Single.

I remember being a preteen and watching this like I knew what was going on. I really had no idea but after watching it many years later, I really enjoyed it.

Daria

TV14, 1997, 5 seasons

The people of Lawndale just don’t get Daria Morgendorffer. See, Daria was born alienated, and now she’s just trying to make it through high school with as little human contact as possible. Daria lacks enthusiasm, but she makes up for it with sarcasm.

For all of us graduating in the late ’90s to early ’00s, this was the holy grail. It was and still is hilarious.

King of the Hill

TV14, 1997, 13 seasons

King of the Hill depicts the life and times of Hank Hill (Mike Judge), his family and their neighbors in the fictional suburb of Arlen, Texas, the heartland of America. A hard-working, loyal family man and proud Texan, Hank is the assistant manager of Strickland Propane. He’s a blue-collar Everyman who sees himself as the voice of common sense and reason in a world of incompetent sales clerks, meddling bureaucrats, and do-good liberals.

It’s good, I tell you what. This show is ridiculous in the best way possible.

Feels like the ’90s

Fresh off the Boat

TVPG, 2015, 6 seasons

It’s the ’90s and 12-year old, hip-hop loving Eddie just moved to suburban Orlando from DC’s Chinatown with his parents. It’s a culture shock for his immigrant family in this comedy about pursuing the American Dream.

Based loosely on a true story, this is a much watch for all of us that were coming of age in the ’90s.

When it comes to ’90s show on stream, Netflix has many options.

Charmed

TV14,1998, 8 seasons

After a trio of sisters discover an ancient text in their mansion attic, revealing they possess latent supernatural powers, mischief and drama ensue.

Such a cool show!

That 70s show

TV-14, 1998, 8 seasons

Feeling groovy in 1970s suburbia, where a teen and his pals hang in the basement, listening to rock and indulging other hazy benefits of ’70s culture.

What can I say? In the ’90s we were obsessed with the ’70s.

Twin Peaks

TV-14, 1990, 2 seasons

“Who killed Laura Palmer?” is the question on everyone’s lips in a secretive small town, but as an eccentric FBI agent learns, the answer isn’t easy.

This show broke a lot of new ground.

Star Trek The Next Generation (Also on Prime)

TVPG, 1993, 7 seasons

Decades after the adventures of the original Enterprise crew, Capt. Jean-Luc Picard leads a new Enterprise on missions to explore unknown worlds.

You’re either into Star Trek or you’re not. If you don’t know, give it a try. Maybe you’ll find a new obsession.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine

In this “Star Trek” spin-off, Commander Sisko leads the multi-species crew of Deep Space Nine, a Federation space station with a complex mission.

Chill with Bob Ross

TVG, 1994, 1 season

Iconic artist and master of relaxation, Bob Ross demonstrates the process of creating wintry scenes in these episodes dedicated to the season.

Who doesn’t love Bob Ross? His voice was the original ASMR.

The Magic School Bus

TV-Y, 1997, 4 seasons

Join Ms. Frizzle as the Magic School Bus travels to outer space, under the sea, through an anthill — and even inside the human body!

Everybody knows about the Magic School Bus, right?

Feels like the ’90s

Everything Sucks

It’s 1996 in a town called Boring, where high school misfits in the AV and drama clubs brave the ups and downs of teenage life in the VHS era.

Want a Zima? If you were a teen in the ’90s, watch this show for a blast from the past.

Derry Girls

TVMA, 2019, 2 seasons

Amidst the political conflict of Northern Ireland in the 1990s, five high school students square off with the universal challenges of being a teenager.

Being a teenager before WIFI was rough.

Amazon Prime

Supermarket Sweep

TVG, 1991, 1 season

Teams answer questions to earn time and advantages over their competitors before going on a supermarket shopping spree. The team that adds the most valuable items to their carts wins.

Man, I loved this show! They have the newer reboot too.

3rd Rock from the Sun

TV-PG, 1996, 6 seasons

A group of aliens is sent to Earth – disguised as a human family – to experience and report about life on the third planet from the sun.

So funny! Do you ever feel like an alien, like you don’t understand basic human behavior? They can relate.

Sex and the City

TVMA, 1998, 6 seasons

Sarah Jessica Parker stars in this hit comedy series as a writer whose life and friendships are fodder for her weekly society column.

Wow! Teen girls and women everywhere were hooked.

Grace Under Fire

TVPG, 1993, 5 seasons

Grace is a recovering alcoholic. Now divorced from her abusive husband, she is struggling to bring up three children on her own.

My mom loved this show and later Reba. I can’t see it without thinking about her.

Roseanne

TVPG, 1989 (running through the ’90s), 10 seasons

The story of a working-class family struggling with life’s essential problems: Marriage, Children, Money, and Parents in law.

These reruns were never-ending. I’m sure they are still running somewhere. This was such an interesting mix of people like a real family.

Stargate SG-1

1997, 10 seasons

Stargate SG-1 picks up where the blockbuster film left off. Colonel Jack O’Neill and his SG-1 team; Daniel Jackson, Teal’c, and Captain Samantha Carter, set out to explore the mysteries of the Stargate. Each exciting mission through the gate takes the SG-1 team to new worlds in a seemingly boundless universe.

If you enjoy sci-fi, give this one a chance.

The Sopranos

TVMA, 1999, 6 seasons

HBO’s hit drama series finds stressed-out mob boss Tony Soprano forced to seek therapy.

This barely made the ’90s cut-off but it was such a big deal that it had to be included.

Outer Limits

TV14, 1995, 7 seasons

In the tradition of the classic anthology series, the new series brings the bizarre, frightening, and disturbing back to life; pushing the imagination to its farthest reaches.

Feels like a newer Twilight Zone. Interesting show!

  1. I’m not from the ’90s but I did watch a few shows you mentioned on your list when I was younger. I really liked charmed, Sabrina the teenage witch and full house, it would be my top 3 on your list.

  2. Oooh! I haven’t seen these 90’s shows before. Seinfeld has been going on for the longest! I didn’t realized it went back that far. I’ve heard a lot of things about Full House. For some reason, I couldn’t get into Star Trek. Thanks for sharing all of this!

    Nancy ♥ exquisitely.me

  3. I haven’t seen Buffy in so so so long and I was obsessed with it when I was younger. So many great suggestions here to get us through. It’s really helpful that you broke it down between each platform too x

  4. I love Full House, and Magic School Bus was one of my favorite series as a kid. I love the original Star Trek seasons but I never could get into The Next Generation, even though I tried. I guess some things are not for everyone. 🙂
But since we are looking for new shows and films to watch, I will be going through this list, starting with Saved by the Bell.

  5. We have Buffy on DVDs. 🙂 I have watched Fraiser at least three times. Plus when I just want to have the TV on for “company” but I am not really watching, I turn it on. Never fails to make me laugh. We often watch episodes of Star Trek (different versions). I loved Grace Under Fire, I will have to look for that one. We also, have SG1 on DVD, but my hubby has Stargate Universe in his Hulu list. Thanks for these suggestions.
