Weedon Island State Preserve in St. Petersburg, Florida

We checked out of our hotel room. You can read about the hotel here.  We were on our way to Treasure Island, Florida. We were crossing the bay on HWY 275. I did a quick search for neat things nearby that we could potentially stop at on the way. That’s how we ended up at Weedon Island State Preserve in St. Petersburg, Florida. It was listed as an easy hike and we loved the idea of getting outside early in the day before the heat became to oppressive.

We found a parking spot near the entrance of a path. Octavia, 2, really enjoyed the wood paths because they were so easy to walk on. We seen loads of birds and fish. We didn’t see many people. It was early in the day so I’m sure that helped.

We ended up in an area that had a sand path for a while. It was harder to walk on with Octavia because she didn’t want me to hold her. It was much cooler in the shade so we looked around a little. The girls found some lizards, bugs, and small birds. I was a little afraid that we would come across something scary like a snake too.

There was a lookout area that we climbed to overlook Riviera Bay. It was neat to see the Mangrove trees and tiny islands. They used oysters to create areas for the mangrove trees to grow on. Then more oysters will grow on the trees. They work together to make islands. It’s so neat.

It was lunch time and we were getting hot so we decided to call it a day. Octavia fell and scrapped her knee when we were almost to our car. This was the first boo-boo of many during this trip. It was an easy fix with a kiss and band-aid. We loaded in the car and were off to find lunch. We ended up stopping at a nearby Subway for subs, drinks, and air-conditioning.

This was a great place to spend a few hours outside with nature. It was perfect for the kids to explore a little and run off some energy. I love half day stops with a break in the middle.
