34 Quotes That Inspire Wanderlust

Today we decided to share something a little different. This is a list of 34 wanderlust quotes that have inspired us while working towards and planning our upcoming 2-year trip. We like to put little reminders on our lock screens, on the refrigerator, in our debt-free binder which is now our trip planning binder, and in the day planner, we use to keep track of bills and deadlines. These wanderlust quotes have helped to motivate us when we were feeling defeated or stressed out from working way too much. We hope that they inspire you as much as they have us.

1.) One Day you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted. Do it now. – Paulo Coelho

This one hit me hard. I have a very long bucket list and felt like I hadn’t made much of a dent in it. Anytime I was questioning if I was crazy during this process I would come back to this quote. Michael is much more go with the flow so it didn’t seem to bother him as much.

2.) Move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. Walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move. – Anthony Bourdain

We always loved this man and were so saddened by how his story ended. He has touched so many lives and encouraged many people to step out of their comfort zone. This definately deserves a place on our wanderlust quotes list.

3.) Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it solely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime. – Mark Twain

This is one of those wanderlust quotes that really shakes you to get out of your hometown if only for a little while. The world is a big place. Get out there!

4.) I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t even reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses. – Bill Bryson

We have been traveling with kids for so long that we always try to see things through a child’s eyes. We are oddly looking forward to not knowing what is going on and getting out of our comfort zones.

5.) There was no defining moment, no end result, and no sudden enlightenment. I had waited for it in vain when I should have been living in the moment, enjoying a journey, my journey, my time on this planet. – Keith Foskett

This is from The Journey In Between: A Thru-Hiking Adventure on El Camino de Santiago that I just finished last month. I had to save this when I got to it. These words spoke to my very soul. It was the perfect quote for mindfulness during travel. I am a planner. I have been working hard to stay in the moment as often as possible. Thanks Foz for the perfect quote at the perfect time.

Total wanderlust quote!

A classic wanderlust quote to inspire all of us to get out there more.

8.) Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things: air, sleep, dreams, sea, the sky. All things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it. – Cesare Pavese

Wow! Just Wow! This one has spent some serious time on a post-it note in our travel binder.

9.) Sometimes you just need an adventure to cleanse the bitter taste of life from your soul.

I had to calm some of my own fears to make the choice to go all-in and live our dreams. Getting to a point where this trip is a real possibility has taken a ton of work and sacrifice but it’s also taken a lot of courage.

Another one to remind me to have the courage to do what I have always dreamed of.

You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best of the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you have never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of.
