One of my personal goals for this year was to read more. Once upon a time, I was an avid reader. That has slowed considerably as life got in the way. I decided that I would make time to read a couple of books off my TBR list each month and post a book review, especially for the books I love.

I recently finished The Journey in Between: A Thru-Hiking Adventure on El Camino de Santiago by Keith Foskett and decided immediately that this would be my first book review in a very long time.

Book Description

A man at a crossroads, A thousand-mile hike, A life forever changed.

Keith Foskett was the definition of restless. Drifting aimlessly, he knew a piece was missing from his life. But when a stranger in a Greek bar tells him about a world-famous pilgrim’s trail, the chance encounter sets Foskett’s life in a new 1,000-mile direction.

On El Camino de Santiago, the wanderer copes with extreme temperatures, fake faith healers, and insatiable kleptomaniacs. Threatened with arrest for ‘not sleeping’ and suffering from excruciating blisters, Foskett pushes himself to new limits. Can he find what he’s looking for and make it to the other side?

Keith Foskett’s travelogues have been shortlisted for Outdoor Book of the Year multiple times by The Great Outdoors magazine. Awash with vivid descriptions and a cast of engaging real-life characters, the author delivers a humorous and mesmerizing tale of adventure and metamorphosis.

The Journey in Between is a daring travel memoir. If you like indulging your inner adventurer, taking the less popular fork in the road, and visiting foreign locations, then you’ll love Keith Foskett’s transformative tale.

My Thoughts

Keith aka Foz was working in Greece and by a chance meeting was introduced to the idea of hiking El Camino de Santiago. I believe fate brought him to it. The story starts with him decided to hike and planning. I was completely hooked by the first French campground. From there it became a question of whether he would make it or not. I won’t spoil the story for you but it’s so worth the read. The interesting people he met on the trail was my favorite part.

It’s incredibly well-written, especially for a first book. I was hoping to mark something off my TBR list making it shorter but ended up adding his other books. Such is the life of a reader.

I think that books have a way of coming to you right when you need them to sometimes. This was the perfect book for me during this phase of our lives when everything is being flipped on its head. Planning and preparing for our trip has been a huge undertaking and has been really getting me down. It’s all so stressful and feels like it will never end.

This book was what I needed to remind me of why we are doing all of this. It gave me back my wanderlust that was being stomped on by stress and ridiculously long to-do lists. It reminded me to look for joy and lessons in the process because what we are doing now is not only important, it’s part of our lives. We will never get this time back. We will never live in this house again once we sell it. It’s doubtful we will ever live in Cincinnati again. I really needed the reminder to live the journey!

I loved a quote from this so much that I immediately saved it and we added it to our post 34 quotes that inspire wanderlust.

  1. What does TBR stand for? Its been decades since any book triggered any kind of emotional response like this book seems to have done for you. In fact, not many things do really.

    1. TBR: To be read
This book was definitely unique. It was a very real true story. It was oddly raw in a way that most books can’t pull off even if they are true stories without being boring and dull. My husband and I have always been interested in taking a “long walk” on a trail somewhere. After reading this, we have been thinking this might be just the hike we are interested in. I truly hope you find something that gives you that response. If you have the time and desire to read this, let me know what you think. Maybe it will speak to you too.

  2. As a new travel blogger who is planning a trip to Greece this summer… this book sounds VERY interesting. Thank you for sharing your review. It was very well written and it piqued my interest to look into this book!

  4. “Books have a way of coming to you right when you need them to sometimes.” That’s how I feel about quite a few of the books I’ve read although TBH this probably isn’t one I’d pick up. But I’m glad you loved it so much. Great review!

    1. I have many of those books and it’s such a great feeling when you find a new one. Thanks!

  5. Nice post. I like the way you describe the book and then relate its lessons back you. The El Camino is like the holy grail for those of us that travel with regularity. This book is now a must read for me!

  6. I am not much of a book lover anymore and only read books that are more informative/educational but share stories at the same time too. But this does sound like a great read as you have written this post beautifully

  7. This sounds very similar to ‘Wild’ by Cheryl Strayed where she hikes the Pacific Crest Trail in American on her journey of self-discovery. I absolutely loved that story so this sounds just the sort of book I’d enjoy too! Thank you for sharing your review, I will be adding this one to my list! <3 xx
